In this short project, I explored illustration within the context of the cinematic arts through the production of a film titles sequence where I used photography instead of video. My focus was on story, visual narrative and composition. The goal of most film sequences is to set the ‘mood and underlying core of the film’s story.’ Therefore, I needed to use image, motion, sound, and composition together to create a maximum effect. As a result, I created an appealing sequence using my research. I was able to reimagine, design and produce a thirty second title sequence for Kill Bill (Tarantino, 2003), alongside four members of my class.
Understanding that Tarantino’s style is pacey and stylish I needed to ensure that I created this feeling throughout while using photography instead of video.
My project focused on simplicity while being informed and critically engaging with the subject of the film. Moving-image production deeply intertwines colour, juxtaposition, rhythm, sound and content. Therefore, I used the colour scheme, soundtrack and typography from original film and its advertising posters to further convey this element.
